Lampung (people)
The Lampung are an ethnic group on the Indonesian island of Sumatra and live as a minority in the Lampung province in the south of the island.
Ethnicity and religion
The approximately 1,500,000 Lampung can be divided into two sub-groups : the Pepadun (or Perpaduan ), who live inland and the Saibatin , who settle on the coast. They are mostly Muslim .
Due to the massive immigration mainly from Java , Madura and Bali , which was also supported by the Transmigrasi program, the Lampung have become a minority in their own country.
language
The Lampung have their own language, also called Lampung , which has been displaced by Bahasa Indonesia in the cities . The Lampung language, which is one of the Malayo-Polynesian languages, is still used in the countryside and especially in the Lampung villages . Two dialects can be distinguished: the "O" dialect or Abung is spoken by most Perpaduan, the "A" dialect or Pesisir by the Saibatin and some Perpaduan.
Before the introduction of the Latin script, a separate, clockwise script was used, which is called Had Lampung . The first three letters are called Ka ga nga . As in other Indian and Indonesian scriptures, the vowels are notated above and below the consonants using diacritics.
Language and writing are taught in primary schools in the Lampung areas.
Culture
The values of the Lampung are shaped by the "Piil Pasenggiri" doctrine - it consists of:
- Piil Pasanggiri: behavior and attitude to life
- Nengah Nyappur: Openness to community and society
- Nemui Nyimah: Generosity and kindness
- Berjuluk Beadek: To honor the other
- Sakai Sambayan: Helping each other
Lampung culture includes dance, the lampung guitar, oral narration and written literature, birth and burial ceremonies.
