Lance Tingay

Lance Tingay (born July 15, 1915 in Ilford , Essex , † March 10, 1990 Wimbledon (London) ) was a British sports journalist.

Life

Tingay first reported on the Wimbledon Championships in 1932 . In 1952 he succeeded John Olliff as tennis correspondent for the Daily Telegraph and remained so until his retirement in 1980. Until the introduction of the computer world rankings in the 1970s by the ATP and WTA , his annually published rankings were recognized worldwide and formed the basis for the creation of seeding lists at major tournaments.

In 1982 he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame . He died in 1990 at the age of 74.
