The building of the former regional and district court on Prospekt Mira 2 (formerly Hansaring 14-16 ) in Kaliningrad is now used by the Kaliningrad State Technical University .

Location and surroundings

The building of the former regional and local court is located on Prospekt Mira (formerly Hansaring ) in the former Mittelhufen . It was the second public building that was built in Koenigsberg after the demolition of the Steindammer Gate “outside the city” on the former fortress area. The building is aligned to the former Hansaring and formed the first construction phase of a larger building complex.

There are numerous other public buildings in the immediate vicinity: Directly to the west is the neoclassical former Oberpostdirektion, further to the west the neoclassical Neue Schauspielhaus (now Kaliningrad Drama Theater ) and to the south the former Prussian State Archives , built in the New Objectivity style .

history

The Ministry of Public Works in Berlin was responsible for the draft planning under the direction of the Oberbaurat Saal (1860-1918). The government and building officer Stiehl in the government in Königsberg was in charge of the execution. The local construction management had government builder Schmidt, government builder Kraatz and government builder Henrich.

The building was built from 1913 to 1917 in the neo-baroque style. In a second construction phase, an extension was built from 1929 to 1931 . Before that, the court prison was built in the years 1927 to 1929, the extension of the men's wing was not completed until 1931 to 1933.

description

portal

The entrance is in the projecting central risalit. Two pillars frame the entrance. The pillars carry a gable . In the middle of the broken gable is a medallion. The individual window axes of the central risalit are structured by pilasters and - "as the epitome of baroque decoration" - each pilaster is crowned by a vase. The eaves are raised by 1.5 m and the eaves cornice is more heavily decorated than in the side wings and decorated with a balustrade. The artificial stone decorations of the main portal and the eaves come from the sculptor Hermann Thiele (1867–1930). The vestibule in the central building is decorated with ornaments and leads to the spacious staircase with two symmetrically arranged three-flight stairs.

In front of the central portal is the sculpture Fighting Wisente by the sculptor August Gaul , which was erected in 1912 .
