Land & Liebe is a documentary soap by NDR in which people from the country are looking for a partner.

The docu-soap was the first dating format of its kind on German television and went on air on July 20, 2005, three months before Bauer sucht Frau was first broadcast on the private broadcaster RTL . At that time Ina Müller was leading through Land & Liebe , in 2009 she was replaced by Yared Dibaba .

The fifth season of Land & Liebe started on October 12, 2010 with six new episodes, which were each broadcast on Tuesday at 9 p.m. on NDR television.

In Land & Liebe , country singles are looking for a life partner with whom they would like to share their private happiness as well as their work on their farm. After a presentation of the candidates on NDR television, viewers can apply for their dream partner. The candidates then shortlist three applicants. Yared Dibaba arranges meetings on neutral ground, mostly in the city. After three meetings, the candidate selects two applicants for the farm days. At the farm days, the applicants should prove that they are "fit for the country" in order to win the candidate's heart. During the broadcast, viewers learn a lot about life in the country and get to know the most beautiful areas of northern Germany.

The series is based on the British format Farmer Wants a Wife , which was broadcast in 2001 on Independent Television (itv). In Swiss television in 1983 a similar format was named Farmer wants a farmer broadcast. Even before the German version, an Austrian format started on ATV , moderated by Katrin Lampe . The format is now also being adopted in other English-speaking countries. In Australia , the first season on Nine Network began on October 24, 2007 . In the United States, The CW aired the first season of its version from April 30, 2008 to June 25, 2008.

The similarly structured format " Bauer sucht Frau " is running on the German private broadcaster RTL , which, however , is shaped by the approach and implementation of private television and is therefore criticized by the rural population and the German Farmers' Association for showing farmers and being unworldly to represent.
