The Landscape Information Center Water and Forest Möhnesee e. V. (Liz) is an environmental education and nature conservation institution that uses exhibitions and excursions to present the special features of the Möhnese region and thus wants to contribute to more environmentally friendly behavior.

history

The Günner mill was built in 1913 as a machine mill, partly from the same quarry stone as the barrier wall. It was a replacement for an old water mill that had to give way when the dam was built. As part of the Schulte-Günne estate, it passed into the possession of the Schade family in 1933. This operated the mill until the 1960s. Because of the thick quarry stone walls, the building survived the great flood disaster and the British air raid on the dam on the night of 16/17. May 1943 as the only building relatively undamaged. In 1989 the municipality of Möhnesee acquired the building and restored it with financial support from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Shortly afterwards, the old Günner mill was placed under monument protection. Since 1993 she has been available to Liz for exhibitions and activities. On June 11, 1994, the Liz opened its doors to visitors for the first time.

Since 2000, the landscape information center has looked after the Möhneaue-Völlinghausen and Hevearm-Hevesee nature reserves of the Möhnetalsperre with scientific mapping and visitor guidance measures.

exhibition

The Liz exhibition relates to the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park , the Möhnetalsperre , water and forest in three adventure rooms .

Landscape experience

The ground floor uses a landscape model and a multimedia station to show information about the Arnsberg Forest Nature Park. Furthermore, this adventure space provides interactive information about the tasks, history and functions of the Möhne reservoir.

Water experience

The second experience room offers information about the water supply and an interactive water column for drinking water consumption, as well as information about the Möhnesee habitat. A talking gray heron, a microscope station and an aquarium provide insights into the topics of nature conservation, water quality and the water environment.

Forest floor

Information on the forest habitat can be found in the forest floor. The focus here is on the beech forest habitat, whose inhabitants talk about an animal voice station , forestry then and now, the contrast between deciduous and coniferous forests and the forest school area with sensor boxes , tactile memory and earthworm showcases.

There is a large terrarium in the middle of the room . The native dwarf mice living in it can be observed in different habitats.

Lecture room

Here is a touchscreen film station with lectures and films on the topics of water and forest, including the Möhne disaster in 1943.

Outdoor area

The outdoor area consists of various small biotopes, such as a pond and a rural perennial garden. In addition, the garden offers nesting aids for wild bees, birds and bats, willow tunnels and tepees and a sensory path.

In addition to the exhibition, the Liz organizes environmental education programs, guided tours and excursions for all ages.

Möhne LIFE PROJECT

Since January 2010, Liz has been a project partner in the European Life + project “Möhneaue”, which aims to renaturate the developed river landscapes of the Möhne and make them permanently liveable for plants, animals and people.

organization

The sponsoring association for the Möhnesee Water and Forest Landscape Information Center was founded in 1992 and ensures ongoing operations through donations, membership fees, proceeds from entrance fees and other projects. The establishment of the Liz permanent exhibition was funded 50% by the North Rhine Westphalia Foundation for Nature Conservation, Heritage and Cultural Care and the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The chairman of the Liz is Bernhard Schladör. The biologist Kerstin Heim-Zülsdorf is in charge of the information center. In addition to the permanent employees, Liz has three FöJ positions and an internship in environmental education and nature conservation every year .
