Landscape images from the Kingdom of Saxony

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Landscape Pictures from the Kingdom of Saxony , also abbreviated to Landscape Pictures from the Kingdom of Saxony on the outer title , is a series of books published between 1905 and 1911 on the most important landscapes of the Kingdom of Saxony . The individual volumes were recommended by the Ministry of Culture and Public Education of Saxony.

Nine volumes (departments) were published by senior teacher Emil Schöne from Dresden with the help of proven experts . The individual volumes were published by HW Schlimpert in Meißen with a similar appearance . All volumes were illustrated by numerous black and white images, with maps in the text and a topographical and an orohydrographic map at the end of the respective book. In addition, they usually also contained a profile sheet. The individual volumes were printed by FJ Eberlein in Pirna .

The individual landscapes were usually described according to a uniform scheme. At first, the focus was on nature. Surface shape, geological development, irrigation and flora and fauna were described in detail. Then followed a chapter on man in his relationship to the respective landscape. The economic conditions, the traffic routes, the settlement phenomena (settlement, location of the settlements, shape and construction of the settlements, size and population density) and finally the political structures were described. In terms of content, much of the information contained in the volumes is outdated and out of date after more than 100 years.

The following nine volumes have been published in the following first editions:

  • Emil Schöne : The Elbe valley landscape below Pirna . Meissen 1905.
  • August Simon: The Vogtland . Meissen 1905.
  • Hans Stübler: Saxon Switzerland . Meissen 1905.
  • Karl May , Ernst Tittel: The Oschatz hills and lowlands between the Mulde and the Elbe . Meissen 1905.
  • Otto Beyer, Clemens Förster, Christian March: The Upper Lusatia . Meissen 1906.
  • Richard Mahler, Max Kästner : The low mountain range . Meissen 1906.
  • Richard Buschick, Hermann Ulbricht: The Leipzig lowland bay . Meissen 1906.
  • Felix Haensch, Alfred Pelz: The Zwickau-Chemnitz coal area . Meissen 1908.
  • Johannes Zemmrich, Carl Gäbert: The Ore Mountains . Meissen 1911.

Originally, the volume about the Ore Mountains should appear earlier. However, due to the change of the editor from Bruno Nestler to Johannes Zemmrich and Carl Gäbert, the publication was delayed by a few years, so that the book series could not be completed until 1911 with the ninth and last volume.

Due to the First World War and the dissolution of the Kingdom of Saxony, there was no reprint of the individual volumes of the landscape pictures.
