Slot milling cutter

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The slot cutter is a special end mill that can be used to make slots in wood , metal and plastic . As with most end mills, it can be used as a circumferential or face mill. It differs from other end mills in that it has at least one cutting edge on the face that extends from the center. Only then is it possible to pierce the workpiece, because this cutting edge enables the entire face to be cleared (to put it simply, it can be used like a drill). Normal end mills have a gap in the center which makes deep grooving impossible because no chip removal takes place in the center. The slot milling cutter often differs from a normal end mill because of the smaller number of cutting edges, because it usually only has two or three cutting edges.

Production of elongated holes

Most elongated holes are made with long hole milling cutters, especially elongated holes that are not continuous can hardly be made otherwise by machine. Here, one pierces with the slot cutter at one end of the slot, mills a correspondingly long groove out of the workpiece and pulls the cutter out at the other end. However, this means that no very precise elongated holes are possible. Exact elongated holes that are used for a fit must be produced in a more complex manner. As a rule, two milling cutters with different diameters are used.

The production of elongated holes is not only possible on milling machines , but also on special upright drilling machines . These have a correspondingly stable table, which allows the workpiece to be moved in the X and / or Y axis under the tool. Drills set up in this way are also referred to as slot drilling machines.
