Foal market

The foal market in Sinsheim is an annual folk festival whose origins lie in the once important market for cold-blooded horses , which was founded in 1902 . The five-day event is considered to be the traditional festival in the Kraichgau .

history

Around 1890, following a call from the Lower Baden horse breeding cooperatives, the breeding of Belgian draft fillies in Kraichgau began. A breed club founded in 1896 soon had 92 members and they gradually had sales difficulties. In 1902, the city of Sinsheim received permission from the Baden Ministry of the Interior to hold an annual foal market.

The first foal market took place on November 22nd, 1902 on the Sinsheimer Stadtwiese. The first market was already a great success and quickly attracted buyers from all over southern Germany. After only a few years there were considerations to set up a central breeding station in Sinsheim, which had become the center of cold blood breeding in northern Baden. From foundations and donations from its 1200 members, the breeding cooperative acquired 230 plots of land with a total area of 50 hectares on the boundary between Sinsheim , Hoffenheim and Dühren , where a pasture with an administrator's apartment was built in 1913/14.

In the 1920s there were two annual horse markets, as well as many horse samples, licensing and awards. The gradual change from the foal market to a folk festival dates back to this time. The big pageant was an attraction for many onlookers who, after the spring market had been moved to the weekend before Pentecost , were able to visit the parade outside of the working week.

After the Second World War, the supply of the market tended away from horses and towards agricultural machinery , and the amusement park and the grocer's market took up more space. More recently there has been a greater supply of horses again, but now fewer cold-blooded workhorses, but predominantly Württemberg warm-blooded horses as riding horses.

The foal market is held annually one week before Pentecost. The market begins on Ascension Day and lasts for five days. In the vicinity of the foal market there are riding tournaments and association horse shows, but also concerts and exhibitions as well as a captive balloon flight competition and other things.
