The long-tailed mountain pigeon ( Gymnophaps mada ), also known as the mada dove , is a species of pigeon birds. It occurs exclusively on a few Southeast Asian islands.

Appearance

The long-tailed mountain pigeon reaches a body length of 36.5 centimeters and is thus slightly larger than the mountain pigeon species Albertistaube and smaller than the pale mountain pigeon . It is similar in shape to the other two species of pigeon, but it has the longest tail feathers of all mountain pigeons. The head and neck are light gray. The throat and ear patches are white to cream in color. The breast plumage is also white, but often tinged with reddish. On the belly and under the tail-coverts, the plumage turns into a deep yellow-pink. The upper side of the body is smoky gray with narrow black-lined feathers, so that the plumage looks scaled here. As with all mountain pigeons, the dark circles are featherless, very large and red.

Spread and behavior

The long-tailed mountain pigeon only occurs on two Moluccas islands. It colonizes Seram and Buru , with Buru having a slightly higher population density. It inhabits primary and old secondary forests in the mountains in its range. It occasionally crosses cultivated land in the lowlands by flying, but is mainly to be found in altitude regions between 775 and 2,250 meters above sea level. So far nothing is known about the breeding biology of this species.
