The long-tailed New Guinea marsupial mouse ( Murexia longicaudata ) is a mammal from the predatory mammal family that occurs on New Guinea and offshore islands.

description

Males weigh 114–434 g, the much smaller females only 57–88 g. The fur is matt grayish brown on the top, the belly is beige whitish. The long, sparsely hairy tail has some long hair at the tip.

Habitat and way of life

The long-tailed New Guinea bag mouse inhabits all kinds of forests from the plains to heights of 2,200 m. The leaf nest is built high in the treetops, but there are also shelters on the ground. Females can mate all year round. Up to four young are born per litter and grow up in their mother's pouch.

status

The population is considered to be secured, therefore the species is listed as not endangered ("least concern") by the IUCN .

Systematics

The long-tailed New Guinea pouch mouse formerly formed the genus Murexia together with the Rothschild New Guinea pouch mouse. In 2005, the genus Murexia was separated by Colin Groves into the two monotypical genera Murexia for the long-tailed New Guinea pouch mouse and Paramurexia for the Rothschild New Guinea pouch on the basis of cladistic analyzes . However, genetic studies continue to support a combination of both species in the genus Murexia .
