Lannan Literary Award

The Lannan Literary Awards are literary prizes in various categories and grants that have been awarded annually by the Lannan Foundation since 1989 .

background

The Lannan Foundation was founded in 1960 by the entrepreneur J. Patrick Lannan Senior († 1983) and six years after his death, thanks to a donation from Lennan Senior's estate , it was able to award the literary prizes. After the expansion of the foundation under Patrik Junior, scholarships have been awarded since 1999. In addition to the literary prizes, the foundation awards the Lannan Cultural Freedom Award “to recognize people whose extraordinary and courageous work celebrates the human right to freedom of imagination, inquiry, and expression” (to personalities for extraordinary and courageous work for the Honor human rights to freedom of thought, research and expression).

Awards

Often two or more awards are given per category each year, and occasionally no one is honored. The individual categories are:

  • the Lannan Literary Award for Poetry (for poetry and poetry )
  • the Lannan Literary Award for Fiction (for fictional literature)
  • the Lannan Literary Award for Nonfiction (for non-fiction books )
  • the Lannan Literary Award for An Especially Notable Book (for a particularly notable book )
  • the Lannan Lifetime Achievement Award (for life's work )

In addition, the Lannan Literary Fellowships are awarded.
