Lapa de Gargantáns

The Menhir Lapa von Gargantáns stands north of Pontevedra about 200 m from Castro Gargantáns on a damp meadow and has long served as a boundary stone between the communities of San Martiño de Gargantáns and Santa Xusta de Moraña in Galicia, Spain .

In Galicia, Lapa (among other terms) usually refers to a megalithic complex and Gargantáns seems to have been a local noble name.

The lapa by Gargantáns is a pointed menhir with a square base and a diameter of about 50 cm in the middle. Its total length is 2.35 m of which 1.92 m are visible, while 43 cm lie in the ground.

About 20 bowls spread over the entire length and all sides are on the stone. On one side of the menhir shows a weakly formed recess, which was interpreted by some authors as a representation of the glans , which points to the phallic aspect of menhirs and their importance in the fertility cult.

The Lapa was examined and re-erected in 1982. During the excavations it was found that the menhir was placed on a depression in the rock and was stabilized by means of two stone blocks and several smaller stones at the base.
