Laplatasaurus ("La Plata Lizard") is a genus of sauropod dinosaurs from the Upper Cretaceous in South America. Only the type species L. araukanicus scientifically describedby Huene in 1929has so far been classified in the genus established by him in 1927.
description
The on Titanosauridae scoring laplatasaurus lived during the Late Cretaceous (late Campanian ). Like all sauropods, it was a herbivore and moved four-legged . It was up to 18 meters long and resembled a Titanosaurus enlarged by 50 percent , but with slimmer limbs, and had, similar to Saltasaurus , skin armor on the back. Von Huene's description is based on about 20 caudal vertebrae (10 of which are connected), two or three presacral vertebrae (vertebrae in front of the pelvis (sacrum)) and most of the extremities. Skull material is not preserved.
Locations and type
Fossils of laplatasaurus were in Argentina (Palacios lineup Laguna Province Castillo lineup, Bajo Barreal-formation, Rio Negro and Los-Blanquitos lineup, Province of Salta ) and Uruguay found (Asencio Formation).
Laplatasaurus was the first sauropod to be discovered to have body armor and is named for the region around the Argentine city of La Plata where its fossils were found. Due to the lack of a holotype , Bonaparte and Gasparini chose the MLP in 1979. 26-306 ( Shin and fibula ) as lectotype from.
