José Fernando Bonaparte
José Fernando Bonaparte (born June 14, 1928 in Rosario , Santa Fe Province , † February 18, 2020 in Mercedes , Buenos Aires Province ) was an Argentine paleontologist .
Life
José Bonaparte was born the son of an Italian sailor in Rosario and grew up in Mercedes. He never received formal training in paleontology, but began collecting fossils at an early age and established a museum in his hometown. He later became a curator at the National University of Tucumán , which also awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1974. In the late 1970s, he became a senior scientist at the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales Bernardino Rivadavia in Buenos Aires.
Bonaparte is considered the Nestor of the dinosaur explorers in Argentina. In 1993 he and Rodolfo Coria were the first to describe one of the largest land animals ever living, the Argentinosaurus . Further first descriptions of him are Carnotaurus , Abelisaurus , Saltasaurus , Alvarezsaurus , Riojasaurus , Andesaurus , Amargasaurus and the introduction of the group of Neosauropoda . The Cañadón-Asfalto Formation , in which he made numerous finds from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, proved to be a particularly fruitful find for him and his colleagues .
In 2008 he received the Romer Simpson Medal .
