The Largo do Barão de Quintela is a square in the center of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It is located in the historic Chiado district between the two streets Rua das Flores and Rua do Alecrim , which lead up from the banks of the Tagus River to Praça Luís de Camões .

history

The history of the place is closely related to the merchant Joaquim Pedro Quintela connected (1748-1817), tobacco monopolist and a member of the Council of Queen D. Maria I . In 1788, Quintela had the Palácio Quintela built on the ruins of the palace of the Marquês de Valença, which burned down in 1729, on the east side of today's square . According to the historian Norberto Araújo, he bought the huts on the opposite side of the palace and had them leveled in order to create a place named after him in front of his property.

In the center of the square, which is now a small park, a monument to the poet Eça de Queiroz (1845–1900) was erected in 1903, three years after his death . Inspired by the words of the poet "on the nakedness of truth, the transparent cloak of fantasy" ( sobre a nudez da Verdade o manto diáfano da Fantasia ), the sculptor António Teixeira Lopes created a portrait of the poet, in front of which a female figure, an allegory of truth , spreading her arms.

The headquarters of the Bombeiros Voluntários de Lisboa (= volunteer fire brigade ) is located on the north side of the square (house number 7-14), and a block of flats on the south side of the square (house number 1-5).
