The Rua do Alecrim (German: Rosmarinstraße ) is a street in the center of the Portuguese capital Lisbon . It is the central connection from the Cais do Sodré on the banks of the Tagus up to the Bairro Alto . It begins at Praça Duque de Terceira and flows into Praça Luís de Camões in the municipality of Misericórdia .
history
Originally the street was named Rua do Conde or Rua Direita do Conde . Its current name has been proven since 1693. It was already an important link between the banks of the Tejo and the Upper Town in pre-Pombal times. Today's street layout, laid out after the earthquake of 1755 , follows roughly two-thirds of the historic Rua do Conde . Before the earthquake, the road ended at Rua da Cordoaria Nova and was bordered to the north by the Palácio do Marquês de Valência , which burned down in 1729. The merchant Joaquim Pedro Quintela (1748–1817) had the Palácio Quintela built on its ruins and the Largo do Barão de Quintela laid out in place of the huts opposite . The palace now houses a design school. To the west of the palace was the Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Alecrim , which gave the street its name.
In August 1842, the road along the old city wall Muralha Fernandina was paved for the first time.
