Lars Leksell

Lars Gustaf Fritiof Leksell (born November 23, 1907 in Fässberg , † January 12, 1986 in the Swiss Alps ) was a Swedish neurosurgeon .

Life

Leksell studied medicine at the Karolinska Institute . There he began his neurosurgical training in 1935 under Herbert Olivecrona . After his retirement in 1960, Leksell succeeded him as professor and head of neurosurgery. In 1974 he retired.

Lars Leksell is considered to be the founder of radiosurgery . Together with the Swedish physicist Börje Larsson , he carried out the high-precision radiation treatment for the first time in 1968 with the gamma knife . Leksell called his concept of a single high-precision irradiation while protecting the structures surrounding the target area "radiosurgery" in reference to the claimed "surgical precision".
