Gluteal cramp

A laryngospasm (also known as spasm or laryngospasm referred to) is a tension of the glottis of the larynx , the inhalation of liquids u. Even with deep unconsciousness and the associated muscle relaxation prevented. It is an effective protective mechanism.

causes

A glottic spasm is often observed through aspirated water droplets in water sports (e.g. diving ). The cessation of breathing usually leads to panic and often to unconsciousness. While in around 90% of those affected the spasm resolves again through the fainting, it comes to around 10% (of the divers) to a persistent blockage of the airways and thus u. a. to dry drowning . The reason for this, however, is not the spasm itself, but rather that the causes that triggered the spasm could not be eliminated by the involuntary coughing reflexes that occurred when spontaneous breathing began .

Laryngospasm is a dreaded complication during induction or discharge of anesthesia . It occurs here due to the manipulation and irritation ( excitation ) of the lower airways during endotracheal intubation or extubation . The high negative pressure when the glottis is closed can cause pulmonary edema ( noncardiogenic pulmonary edema ).

treatment

The spasm usually resolves when the cause of the irritation is removed.

In emergency medicine, positive pressure ventilation with a mask is sufficient for mild cases, otherwise the spasm must be resolved with the help of muscle relaxants ( succinylcholine ). After that, however, intubation and ventilation are necessary.

As a last resort, one is coniotomy displayed.
