The Rudi Carrell Show - Let me surprise was both the last Saturday night show of Rudi Carrell and his last big show at public TV channels . Regardless of the same name, it has nothing to do with the Rudi Carrell Show from the 1960s and early 1970s, rather it is a combination of a talent and surprise show. In common parlance, there was mostly only talk of the surprise show.

prehistory

Carrell had after the premature end of at churning out a break inserted first. From 1984 he presented Die verflixte 7 , which was quite successful again, but whose ratings did not come close to those of the earlier show. This should change a new show.

Idol

For the show, there are two British models: Surprise Surprise radio station ITV and live sound . In Surprise Surprise , people were surprised by acquaintances telling the show their greatest wish. It was therefore important that the candidates were not allowed to write themselves, as it was not a wish-fulfillment show, but a surprise show. In live sounds , laypeople imitated a star in which they were dressed just like their idol and sang one of his tracks live.

procedure

Impersonators

There were five impersonators in each broadcast. They were first shown in their professional environment by recreating a suitable backdrop. This could be a pharmacy, for example. Carrell had a short conversation with them and then handed them their stage outfit, which was hanging ready on a mobile clothes rack. With the coat hanger in hand, the impersonator could be seen walking down the corridor to the stage. This included the saying of Carrell: “Just in the pharmacy, now on the show stage!” In the next shot, he was seen entering the stage dressed in stage clothes. In the end, the audience decided which of the five impersonators would receive the golden microphone, the award of the show.

Surprises in the studio

The surprises that were met during the show could be very different. For example, a woman could no longer find a certain title by Peter Alexander and only knew one line of it. So the artist himself was invited to the show and he personally handed over the record in question. A special highlight was always bringing people together who had not seen each other for many years. Since Carrell found that the British original was being pushed too hard on the tear nozzle, he proceeded more cautiously. Harald Schmidt said:

“These scenes could actually be shown as a didactic play to all the moderators - like the one standing apart when the family hugs each other. He doesn't run into the scene like a bad moderator and try to scold it. Such scenes show that Rudi is an absolute professional. "

Surprises with a movie

Some surprises were shown with feature films on the show. The wishes were selected according to how they could be effectively implemented. These included, for example, a baker's wish to drive out the rolls in a Porsche, or a cake fight. Carrell appeared at the person's workplace, where the surprise was immediately implemented.

Rudigram

The rudigram was specially written and sung by Carrell in praise of a particularly committed person, such as a school caretaker or the waitress in a canteen. This included a film in which the person concerned was shown at work. The music was written by Tonny Eyk, an old friend of Carrell's.

production

Studio

In contrast to Die verflixte 7 , the Rudi Carrell Show didn't come from different halls, but always from the television studio.

recording

All editions of the Rudi Carrell Show have been broadcast on recordings. The show was too complicated to broadcast live. In addition, you could cut out the unsuitable. A studio guest, surprised by an old friend, once said that we would have met soon anyway. This statement has been cut out.

success

The Rudi Carrell Show was a great success with up to 17 million viewers. The Rudi Carrell Show has been broadcast as a Eurovision program since 1990 . The success was - in addition to the person of Carrell - also due to the lavishly made feature films.

The End

The show ended prematurely because Carrell went to RTL as a producer and also worked on a show there. At the time, the ARD rule was that you were not allowed to appear on a public and private television station at the same time. This principle only ended when Thomas Gottschalk returned to Wetten, dass ..? . The official reason from Carrell, however, was that there were no more good surprises.

Reissue

The concept of the Rudi Carrell Show was taken up again in 1996 by Thomas Ohrner under the old additional title Let yourself be surprised .
