Lasseindra Ninja (* 1986 ) is the stage name of a French, queer Vogu dancer . In France, she is considered a pioneer of voguing, a dance style that emerged in New York in the 1980s as part of the ballroom culture.

biography

Ninja started dancing vouge at the age of 20 after she was discovered by one of the most famous collectives in New York. Upon her return, she started to host balls (or ballrooms) where drag queens and transgender people made their identity in dance and made so voguing is better known in France and mostly in Paris.

In France, Ninja founded the "House of Ninja", an international vouge collective in Paris. It follows the tradition of Stéphane Mizrahi and GIo Brooks , who practiced this dance in France.

In a radio interview with RTS, she talked about bringing voguing into the Parisian hip-hop milieu: “ They thought it was a dance in which the female gender could be found, but it is not a dance that was originally performed by biological women was created. " Because of this need for exchange and encouraged by the second pioneer of Voguing in France, Mother Steffi, she initiated a ballroom scene, to make known to this American culture. French influences were also added to voguing during this process. For her, voguing is an important form of freedom of personal expression. Still, she wants to preserve the legacy of ballroom culture when this scene is connected to her own social and political roots.

Ninja was featured in the 2016 documentary Paris is voguing by Gabrielle Culand, which aired on France 4. The film mainly shows the competitions from a mixture of fashion show and dance against each other.

According to Ninja, the American ballroom scene is still not properly understood: " It is difficult for white people to understand the ballroom scene because it is a scene characterized by blacks."
