Late Shift celebrated its world premiere on March 9, 2016 at the Riff Raff cinema in Zurich . One day later, the film was released as an app for download in the App Store . On April 18, 2017, Late Shift was released for Windows , Mac OS X , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One . The game was released for Nintendo Switch on April 26, 2018 .

Plot and game play

In London, the analytically-minded student Matt earns some extra money parking luxury automobiles. When he started his late shift in the parking garage one night, he was threatened with a gun by an injured criminal. This forces the student to drive him to a meeting point with other robbers. The group of criminals was hired to steal an antique Chinese rice bowl from an auction house. Matt becomes part of the theft by force.

However, through decisions the player has the option to prevent the robbery or to play along. As the story progresses, Matt becomes more and more involved in the criminal machinations. A powerful Chinese family clan, the "Tchois", claims the antiquity for themselves, they do not stop at human victims either. The player has the task, and depending on the decision, an accomplice, to protect himself from the pursuit of the Tchois and to escape the police.

There are seven different endings of the film, depending on how the player decides with a good or bad outcome for mate. In addition, the player can explore up to 14 main chapters.

development

Late Shift was created as a Swiss-English co-production of CtrlMovie with Late Shift Production UK Ltd. & Sons filmed in London with mostly English actors - Japanese actress Haruka Abe plays a leading role, Swiss actor Joel Basman a supporting role. Also SRG SSR and the company SRF were involved in the production.

The budget for late shift - and with seven different endings - was relatively low: CtrlMovie invested one and a half million francs in the production, the equivalent of around 1.37 million euros.

reception

Reviews

The game received mixed, albeit mostly positive, ratings from the trade press. On Metacritic, the game achieved a Metascore of 80/100 points and a user rating of 6.8 / 10.

The cinematic implementation and the acting performance of the actors were praised. It was criticized that with about 180 decision points only seven endings would come about. Understanding was expressed for this, however, as high-quality film material was used for each scene.

Awards

At the Best Mobile App Awards in May 2016, Late Shift was recognized in the “Best Mobile App Interface” category.

In addition, Late Shift was nominated for the 13th International Mobile Gaming Awards and the Unity Awards 2017.

Alongside Beyond: Two Souls and LA Noire, Late Shift is one of the few computer games that was presented at a film festival. Late Shift was shown at the Cannes International Film Festival in May 2016 .
