The running cuckoo ( Carpococcyx ) are a genus from the family of the cuckoo birds, which belongs to the subfamily of the great beaked cuckoos . Unlike many species of cuckoos, they are not brood parasites , but raise their offspring themselves.

Running cuckoos are predominantly ground-dwelling cuckoos that occur exclusively in Southeast Asia. For some years now, three species have been distinguished that belong to this genus. The Sumatran running cuckoo was previously considered a subspecies of the Borneo running cuckoo for a long time . All three species are resident birds.

features

Running cuckoos are one of the great types of cuckoo. The smallest species, the Sumatran running cuckoo, reaches a body length of 55 centimeters. The Renauld cuckoo, which is the largest species within the genus, even reaches a body length of 70 centimeters. All three species have long control springs and appear pheasant-like with their compact body, long legs and posture.

distribution and habitat

The Sumatran running cuckoo is restricted to southwestern Sumatra , whereas the running cuckoo is found in the lowlands of Borneo . The Renauld cuckoo , which can be found in Thailand , Laos , Cambodia and Vietnam, has the largest distribution area .

All three species are forest dwellers. The Sumatran cuckoo inhabits hillside forests at altitudes between 300 and 1400 meters. The running cuckoo, on the other hand, prefers dry forests near rivers in the lowlands of Borneo. The Renauld cuckoo occurs in moist evergreen forests with dense vegetation.

Duration

The Sumatran running cuckoo is listed by BirdLife International in the critically endangered category. The inventory is estimated at only 50 to 250 copies. The running cuckoo native to Borneo is considered to be potentially endangered because its habitat is becoming increasingly smaller due to deforestation. Although it is not directly hunted by the indigenous population of Borneo, it repeatedly dies in traps that are set for other wild animals. The Renauld cuckoo , on the other hand, is not considered endangered in its population.

species

The following species are included in the genus:

Each of the species is monotypical .

Trivia

The German name and the specific epithet of the Renauld cuckoo honor the French missionary JN Renauld (* 1838; † 1898), who collected numerous specimens of Vietnamese flora and fauna during his missionary work in Vietnam and whose collection founded the Vietnamese Natural History Museum in 1898.
