Launer London is a British manufacturer of luxury handbags and other small leather goods founded in 1940 by Sam Launer. Launer had emigrated from Czechoslovakia to London at the beginning of the Second World War . The company sold the first handbag to a member of the British royal family in 1950 and later became a purveyor to the court of Queen Elizabeth II.

history

Launer London, Holtshill Lane, Walsall

Sam Launer began making handbags in a small rented workshop in Soho, London . He came from Czechoslovakia, which he had left after the occupation by Germany at the beginning of the Second World War. Launer died in 1955 and the company remained a family business until Gerald Bodmer acquired it in 1981.

In 2011, Launer started producing bags in colors other than the traditional black, brown and navy. As a result, sales rose from € 1.8m (£ 1.5m) in 2011 to € 4.8m (£ 4m) in 2019.

Queen Elizabeth II with a launer bag, 2015

Queen Mother Elizabeth bought a Launer bag for the first time in the 1950s and later gave it to her daughter, Queen Elizabeth II. In 1968, Launer London became the Queen's purveyor to the court and supplied her with bags. The Queen has bought more than 200 of her bags, according to CEO and owner Gerald Bodmer, and her three favorites appear to be a black leather royale, a black patent leather traviata, and a third custom-made bag. According to Bodmer, she also kept all of her mother's Launer bags. The Traviata is Launer's best-selling design, due in part to the queen's influence. The Traviata is handcrafted in Walsall , West Midlands , and retails for around € 2,100 (£ 1800) in 2019 .
