Laurel & Hardy Museum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Laurel and Hardy Museum is a museum in private ownership in Solingen , it displays exhibits of the comedy duo Laurel & Hardy .

history

The museum founders Wolfgang and Vera Günther started a private collection of exhibits from the comedian duo out of love for American slapstick of the silent film and early sound film era. From around 1990 they ran the museum in a second apartment at their former residence on Bismarckstrasse in Solingen. In 2001, when both the premises of their apartment and the museum were terminated, the exhibits were initially packed and could not be exhibited. Rooms initially offered to the family by the city of Solingen were either unsuitable or financially unsustainable. In 2003, the city of Solingen acquired the rooms in the listed Walder Kottenmade available. The 60 m² museum was reopened in its present form by the actress from the early sound film era, Jean Darling .

In addition to film posters, photos, books, characters, newspaper clippings and script copies, the exhibits also include some rarities. These include checks from Stan Laurel from the 1920s, a few meters of original 35mm film, a copy of the only record Stan and Olli recorded, autograph cards and a limited edition US music box with the signature tune of their strips.

The most valuable exhibits for the operators are the original films by Laurel & Hardy, which are shown in the museum. According to its own statements, the museum is the only place where original films by the comedian duo are shown.

Worldwide there are two other comparable museums of the deceased actors: at Stan Laurel's birthplace in Ulverston (England) and at Hardy's birthplace in Harlem (Georgia).
