The Balkhauser Kotten is one of two largely preserved original grinding Kotten on the Wupper in the Bergisch city of Solingen . The Kotten is used as an industrial and grinding museum and is one of the city's most famous landmarks.

The Balkhauser Kotten is located at the foot of the Pfaffenberg in southern Solingen on the city limit to Leichlingen (Rhineland) formed by the Wupper . It is named after the neighboring residential area in Balkhausen . An upper ditch branches off from a weir and fed water to the undershot waterwheel , the power of which was converted into mechanical drive of grindstones and polishing discs.

The trench system, water wheel and mechanical equipment have been preserved to this day and can be viewed together with other themed exhibits. The Kotten is owned by the city of Solingen, is managed by the Kuratorium Balkhauser Kotten eV and is rented to a resident family who, as custodian, enables access to the exhibits.
