Lawrence (Hungarian Lőrinc ; † 1116 / 1117 ) was Archbishop of Gran (Esztergom) from 1105/1106 to 1116/1117.

Life

Lőrinc came from a noble family, his father was a clergyman at the court of the Hungarian king László I. Laurentius possibly studied in Laon . In 1111 he was described as a man who knew how to deal with Philosophia . He became chaplain to King Koloman .

In 1106 at the latest, Laurentius was Archbishop of Gran. He accompanied King Koloman to Dalmatia several times in the following years . Laurentius issued several documents for him, obviously as the person responsible in his office. In his time the diocese of Nitra was re-established. He was the first-mentioned witness in two documents of King Koloman for the Zobor monastery there . Two important synods were held in Gran under Archbishop Laurentius. At the first, fundamental determinations on canon law in Hungary were made, 72 canons were passed. The timing is unclear, 1106 and 1114 are possible.

Archbishop Laurentius directed the funeral ceremonies for King Koloman in 1116 and crowned his son Stephan II as his successor. He initially also ran government business for Stephan, but must have died soon afterwards.
