Laurie Randolph
Laurie Randolph (born June 1, 1950 in Winston , North Carolina ) is an American classical guitarist , gambist (viola da gamba), continuo player , percussionist and composer .
Education
Randolph studied concert guitar with Jesús Silva at the North Carolina School of the Arts and completed her studies in 1974 at the Akademie für Alte Musik with Sarah Cunnigham (viola da gamba) and baroque guitar with Steven Stubbs in Bremen with a Bachelor of Music and a certificate in early music from. She completed masterclasses with Abel Carlevaro, Andrés Segovia, Alirio Diaz and Turibio Santos. Other important lecturers were Cacho Tirao, Eduardo Falú, Raúl García Zarate and Sebastiao Tapajos. She attended master classes with Professor Wieland Kuliken and Ulrike Kinast for viola da gamba and with Walter Waidosch for medieval music and for lute with Steven Stubbs, Jacob Lindberg and Anthony Bailes.
Concerts
Concert tours have taken Laurie Randolph through Europe, Canada, the USA and South America as well as to South Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand. She has given concerts both as a solo artist and in chamber music ensembles with baroque guitar and viola da gamba in the field of early music and classical guitar. Randolph also works as a continuo player in various chamber music ensembles. So z. B. in guitar duo formations with Patrick Zeoli, Jaime Zenamón, Erich Heuer and Barbara Hill as well as with the flautist Carlé Costa, with the flamenco guitarist Anita Sheer (Mano a Mano), as well as with the Trio Tico with Barbara Hill and Mike Turnbull (Brazilian Popular music for flute, percussion and guitar), the Ariadne Musica Baroque Ensemble for transverse flute, violin, harpsichord and viola da gamba. As a percussionist, she accompanied various world music ensembles. In numerous instrument formations she also worked as a musician for Latin American music, Turkish folklore and klezmer. Other ensembles with which Randolph performed are the dance ensembles for historical dance Buon Tempo and Tanz Troupe, the Ensemble Collage (ensemble for medieval music and Renaissance music). The occupation with free improvisation also occupies a large part in Laurie Randolph's work. She formed the project for free improvisation Out of Rail with bassist Jack Lear, the ensemble for Arabic music Rainbow, (conducted by Farhan Sabbagh), a trio with Turkish folklore (Turkish Music from the Black Sea), with Nurhan Uyar and Jack Lear Bass, in which Laurie Randolph played various drum instruments and also appears with her voice. She also performed with Harry # s Freilach Klezmerensemble as well as with the Renaissance and Baroque instrumental ensemble Cappella Stravagante, in which Kathrin Freyburg also played as a soprano.
Randolph also composed numerous solo pieces for concert guitar as well as chamber music works for flute and vocals.
Laurie Randolph plays a 7-string bass viol by JH Goldt, Hamburg from 1741, a treble viol by Bert Dekker, Vries, Netherlands from 2005 and a baroque guitar “Tielke” by Frank-Peter / Markus Dietrich from 1995.
Teaching assignments
Laurie Randolph has also held lectureships for many years at music colleges, for example at the Berlin University of the Arts and the Leipzig University of Music and Theater. She gave master classes with Abel Carlevaro and appeared as an author of music pedagogical literature. She was a competition judge at the Shen Young Conservatory Of Music in China in 2005 and at the Korean International Guitar Festival in 2010.
