The mining railways of the LEAG are referred to as the Lausitz mine railway . They are used to transport the lignite extracted from the Lausitz open-cast mines to the relevant power plants, such as the Boxberg power plant .

The mine railway lines in the Lausitz district had been in operation since 1933 with the 900 mm gauge common in many lignite mining areas, the first section was the coal railway between the coal mines Werminghoff and Clara III and the Zeißholz briquette factory, which was then extended over the years to Laubusch . With the expansion of lignite mining in the 1960s, newly opened open-cast mines in Lusatia were opened up with more efficient standard gauge lines. Connection lines to the power plants, briquette factories and transfer stations to the public railway network were also laid out in regular lane or rerouted on them . The narrow-gauge operation in the Lausitz area ended in 1993.

From 1995 a 15.5 kilometer long section between Knappenrode and the Auerhahn stop on the edge of the Dubringer Moors was used for tourism. The permanent operation by the Förderverein Lausitzer Grubenbahn e. V. was not possible. In 2001 the railway line was finally shut down and partially dismantled. A planned connection to Wittichenau or even Hoyerswerda was not implemented. The wagons and locomotives were brought to the coal railway in Haselbach, where some of the wagons still run today. A small part of the track was able to remain on the grounds of the Knappenrode energy factory, where a 700-meter-long circuit with trolley traffic was built.

The lines still in operation after the turn of the millennium are regular-track and are operated electrically with 2.4 kV DC voltage. There is track changing operation on the double-track lines . The operations center is located in Schwarze Pump .
