The Meuselwitz – Haselbach – Regis-Breitingen coal railway was a narrow-gauge mine railway in Thuringia and Saxony , which operates today as a museum railway. Their track width is 900 millimeters. It is popularly known as the "Kammerforstbahn" because it crosses a forest called the "Kammerforst".

history

For centuries, the north of Altenburger Land was shaped by lignite mining. After the coal railway went into operation in June 1942, the extracted lignite could be transported by train from the Waltersdorf and later Gröba opencast mines, which are connected to one another in the rail network, to the briquette factories in Regis-Breitingen and Haselbach .

In the 1960s the mine railways became more and more important due to the increased mining of lignite. Most of them, including the coal railway from Meuselwitz to Regis-Breitingen, have been electrified and the lines have been equipped with the latest technology.

After the political change in the GDR , the mine railways suddenly lost their importance. Many mine railways were shut down and dismantled. However, numerous citizens campaigned for the preservation of the route and thus saved it from being dismantled. In 1996 the "Verein Kohlenbahn eV" was founded. After the line had been cleared of vegetation and the overhead line dismantled, it could be used again.

Today there is a museum run by the “Verein Kohlenbahn eV”. The trips take place several times a month; the offer is particularly high on public holidays. The trains start in Meuselwitz and go to Regis-Breitingen, and finally return to Meuselwitz.

Route description

The route connects Meuselwitz in Thuringia with Regis-Breitingen in Saxony and crosses the Kammerforst. The route ends shortly after the Saxon border with Thuringia. The former coal railway begins in today's Meuselwitz culture station. Then the stops in Schnaudertal south of Schnauderhainichen and Wintersdorf are passed. Before the line crosses the border, Haselbach train station is reached. Finally, the former coal railway ends at the Regis-Breitingen stop.
