Lute pull on the harpsichord: The treble (right) is activated

Lute pull refers to a mechanical device in the harpsichord that imitates the sound of a lute by dampening the strings .

The lute pull on the harpsichord lowers a felt strip on all or part of the strings by means of a lever mechanism. It is essential for the desired effect that this felt damper acts very close to the web. This means that the string can still vibrate practically freely, but the overtones are dampened and the result is a fundamental sound that comes close to that of a lute plucked with the fingers .
