Philipp Schech (born December 25, 1845 in Karlstadt , † July 2, 1905 in Munich ) was a German doctor. He was instrumental in setting up the Laryngological Polyclinic at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

Live and act

Schech graduated from high school in Würzburg in 1864 and began studying medicine at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . In 1870 he received his doctorate there with a thesis on "Atrophia musculorum lipomatosa" and in 1871 accepted an assistant position at Heinrich von Bamberger's polyclinic in Würzburg . In 1873 he submitted his habilitation thesis Experimental Investigations on the Functions of the Laryngeal Nerves and Muscles , which was still in Würzburg, to the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, where he was appointed as a private lecturer in clinical medicine in the same year. From 1879 he headed the then newly opened outpatient clinic for laryngology in the Reisingerianum . In 1897 he also received the Venia legendi for laryngology and was appointed associate professor in 1890.

In 1901 Schech treated goiter patients with thyroid substances from mutton or pork, which he called "thyroiodine". He found that some of the treated suffered symptoms such as nausea, palpitations and weight loss. Schech called the complex of symptoms "thyroidism" and suspected a reaction to spoiled tablets. It is more likely to have been a hyperthyroidism factitia , an overdose of thyroid hormones .

Schech was the official representative of laryngology in Munich until his death in 1905.
