Alexander Berghaus (2015)

Alexander Berghaus (born January 9, 1952 in Leverkusen ) is a German otorhinolaryngologist and held the chair for ear, nose and throat medicine at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich (LMU). His specialty is aesthetic and reconstructive head and neck surgery.

Life

Berghaus studied human medicine at the Saarland University in Homburg, the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn and at the Free University of Berlin from 1970 to 1976 . In 1978, after the time as a medical assistant, he was licensed to practice medicine. He then worked as a research assistant at the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic of the Steglitz Clinic (Benjamin Franklin) at the Free University of Berlin. In 1981 he was awarded a Dr. med. is doing his doctorate with a thesis on the development of methods for the physiological determination of the value of digitalis preparations. 1981–83 he spent time abroad for reconstructive head and neck surgery in Lausanne, Chicago and New York. In 1983 Berghaus was recognized as a specialist in ear, nose and throat medicine. In 1986 he became the senior physician in charge of the ENT clinic at the Steglitz Clinic, FU Berlin. In 1986 he received his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin and in 1990 he became a professor there (Klinikum Steglitz). From 1993 to 2003 Berghaus was director of the clinic for ear, nose and throat diseases, facial and throat surgery and holder of the chair for ear, nose and throat medicine, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . In 1994 he was dean of the medical faculty there and vice dean from 1996–98. From 2003 until his retirement in 2017 he was director of the clinic for ear, nose and throat medicine at the University of Munich Hospital and holder of the chair for ear, nose and throat medicine at LMU Munich.

Scientific focus

In his habilitation thesis (1986), Berghaus dealt with the development of a prosthetic tracheal replacement as well as auricular framework made of porous polyethylene (PE) for reconstructive surgery. Such PE scaffolds have developed over the course of the following years as an alternative to the already established autogenous costal cartilage for ear reconstruction in the case of microtia and other ear deformities and are used internationally. In 1992 Berghaus summarized his knowledge in the field of implants for head and neck surgery in a main lecture for the German Society for Ear, Nose and Throat Medicine . Berghaus also developed flexible platinum chain implants (German patent together with Thomas Schrom) for the first time as an alternative to the established rigid gold implants for the rehabilitation of the upper eyelid function in facial nerve palsy (so-called "lid loading"). Berghaus also examined the use of implant materials in the context of rhinosurgery. In connection with his particular interest in rhinoplasty , he has continuously worked on the new and further development of operative techniques and instrumentation (instruments for rhinoplasty; German and international patents).

Since 1982, Berghaus has increasingly advocated the replacement of the classic tracheotomy with the epithelialized " bird's nest" tracheostomy (tracheostomy) and has made its advantages clear in films and in publications. In 1993, Berghaus promoted the modified cricothyroidopexy (increasing the tension of the vocal cords ), a successful and low-risk surgical technique that has been increasingly used in Germany to address the question of surgical voice elevation in man-to-woman transsexuals .

In 1987, Berghaus introduced the so-called 'midfacial degloving' in Germany, as it was already practiced in the USA, as an access to the frontal and central skull base that is advantageous in many ways . In the field of oncology / oncosurgery, Berghaus and Wolfgang Draf took over the overview of the tumors occurring here in 1993 in the main lecture “Tumors and surgery of the frontal skull base” for the German ENT Society. In addition to rhinoplasty, another focus of his interest is the auricle correction, especially the post-correction, which is considered difficult if the result of an initial operation is unsatisfactory. In 1996 Berghaus published a textbook on ear, nose and throat medicine with co-authors Gerhard Rettinger and Gerhard Böhme, which stood out for its broad presentation of the topic and innovative didactic design.
