Lavarosette

A lavarosette (also lava rose or lava flower) is a formation of volcanic rock with radially arranged lava columns . The alignment of the lava columns is always perpendicular to the cooling surface, i.e. the outer surface of a lava tunnel or an intrusion .

Often these formations are also called basalt rosette, basalt rose or basalt flower, even if they are not made of basalt.

Occurrence

  • The Rosette Rock in Organ Pipes National Park .
  • The Hirtstein in the Ore Mountains, a basalt fan in the cross section of a spring crest.
