The Lower Saxony Laves Foundation was founded in 2007 after the “Foundation for the Promotion of Young Professionals” , which was set up in 1998 by the Lower Saxony Chamber of Architects , had achieved the necessary foundation capital. With reference to the royal court architect Georg Ludwig Friedrich Laves , the foundation is dedicated not only to promoting training in the field of architecture but also to promoting building culture.

The seat of the foundation is - together with the Lower Saxony Chamber of Architects - the Laveshaus in Hanover , the former home of the namesake. The activities of the foundation reflect the concerns of the entire profession of architects, interior designers, landscape architects and urban planners. Since 2007 the activities have been under the motto “Building is Culture”. The main areas of activity are, in particular, the award of the Laves Prize, an award for students of architecture, interior design and landscape architecture in Lower Saxony, as well as the organization of the discussion series "Architecture in Dialog".

The area of responsibility is gradually being expanded, for example to the implementation and support of exhibitions and events, the establishment and maintenance of a Lower Saxony architecture archive, funding of research projects, publications, etc. The patron of the foundation is the former Lower Saxony Minister of Economic Affairs Walter Hirche .
