The congestive liver ( cirrhosis cardiaque ) is a disease of the liver . It is cirrhosis of the liver caused by congestion of the blood. Blood congestion is usually caused by heart failure . In cardiac cirrhosis, the liver sinusoids expand and this ultimately leads to the death of the liver cells with subsequent cirrhosis. Histologically, it is characterized by cell death around the central vein ( nutmeg liver ).
There are three types of liver congestion : acute, subacute and chronic congestion.
