Lebo M

Lebohang Morake (born May 20, 1964 in Soweto ), known by his stage name Lebo M , is a South African composer, producer and musician.

Life

Morake was born in Soweto, a suburb of Johannesburg . He started singing in clubs at the age of 13. In 1979 he went to the United States on the mediation of the then US ambassador to South Africa. There he was trained at the Duke Ellington School of Arts in Washington, DC . He then lived in Los Angeles . He returned to South Africa in the early 1990s.

He is best known for his work on The Lion King , released in 1994 . He was suggested for it by Hans Zimmer , who had already been entrusted with the creation of the soundtrack by Disney . Lebo M created arrangements and worked as a musician. For the soundtrack he founded and directed an “African” choir. His voice is also the first to be heard during the film The Lion King . He also worked on the soundtrack for the sequels, including The Lion King 2 - Simba's Kingdom and the CD Rhythm of the Pride Lands (1995). From 2014 to 2017 he was on tour several times with Hans Zimmer.

Today he lives in Johannesburg and Los Angeles. He also founded the “Lebo M Foundation” and the company “Till Dawn Entertainment”.
