history

Between the liberal Ustertag in 1830, the sensational school reform by Ignaz Thomas Scherr from 1832 and the reactionary Züriputsch in 1839, the Stadler trade in 1833/34 protested against liberal teaching materials and teaching methods that were compulsory due to the Education Act. From 1845 the reforms were resumed, with more participation of the teachers from 1846. In 1848 a curriculum plan was drawn up. Various complaints were made about the high costs of teaching materials that were not always satisfactory and that the communities had to bear. The School Synod of 1850 therefore petitioned the creation of a state publishing house. Its founding was decided on February 26, 1851 under Education Director Alfred Escher .

The first publishing director, David Wissmann, ran the publishing house on a part-time basis. The publishing house resided in the chairman's office at Hirschengraben 15 in Zurich. In 1899 the publishing house moved to the Turnegg building opposite the Kunsthaus at Kantonsschulstrasse 1, while responsibility on the government council changed from Johann Emanuel Grob to Albert Locher . In 1930 the publishing house moved to the Walcheturm for seven years, then to the Walchetor. In 1960 the publishing house moved to the other side of the Limmat to Wiedikon at Grubenstrasse 40 and from there in 1972 to its current location at Räffelstrasse 32, also in Wiedikon.
