Leipzig Charter for a Sustainable European City

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Leipzig Charter for a Sustainable European City was developed on the initiative of the German Federal Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee and on the occasion of an informal ministerial meeting on urban development and territorial cohesion, which took place on 24/25 May 2007 in Leipzig , signed by the 27 ministers responsible for urban development in the European Union .

The Leipzig Charter incorporates the results of the informal urban development ministers' meetings in Lille (2000), Rotterdam (Urban Acquis, 2004) and Bristol (Bristol Accord, 2005) as well as the results of the European Forum for Architectural Policies (EFAP). The aim is to “protect, strengthen and develop our cities”, with “strong support for the European Union's sustainability strategy ”.

Great importance is attached to the issue in relation to the fulfillment of the Lisbon Strategy (2000) and Göteborg Strategy (2001).

The foreword of the charter states: “In the long term, cities can only perform their function as carriers of social progress and economic growth in the sense of the Lisbon strategy if the social balance within and between the cities can be maintained and their cultural diversity possible and to create a high design, structural and environmental quality.
