The Leipziger Zeitung appeared as a license paper from 1946 to 1948 in the Soviet occupation zone . The circulation figures were always below 150,000 copies, the circulation area was limited to the city limits of Leipzig . The editors were the SED city ​​leadership and the city administration, which at the time was considered to be dominated by old SPD members.

Since 2015 there has been another newspaper under this name, initially appearing as a weekly and then as a monthly newspaper .
