The inguinal toucan ( Andigena laminirostris ) is a South American woodpecker bird . Another name for the bird is leaf-billed blue toucan .

features

The inguinal-billed toucan, up to 50 centimeters long, is blue-gray on the underside and black on the hood. The olive-brown wings have yellow spots on the flanks. The mostly black beak is red at the root and yellow on the flat horn plates on the upper beak sides. The wings are relatively small and rounded, so the bird cannot fly very well. Due to the strong claws, however, it moves nimbly hopping in the branches of the trees.

Unlike the blue toucan , the inguinal- billed toucan has a reputation for excitement. His repertoire of sounds includes a repeated, nasal quuuuah, quuuuah and a choppy rattle.

Occurrence

The bird is native to western Colombia and Ecuador . Its habitat are mountain rainforests overgrown with bromeliads and mosses and forest edge areas of the temperate and subtropical climatic zone. Its height distribution ranges from 300 meters on the Pacific foothills of the Andes up to 3,200 meters.

behavior

The inguinal toucan looks for fruits, insects and small vertebrates in the branches of the trees. The birds live in pairs or in small groups. Occasionally they join mixed flocks of birds in search of food.

Both parent birds usually incubate two to three eggs in woodpecker or tree hollows.

attitude

At the beginning of the 21st century, toucans were kept in four zoological gardens, including the Walsrode World Bird Park . There were no breeding successes in European zoos until 2002, the world's first breeding succeeded in the Los Angeles Zoo.
