Lem (BRITE-PL1, CanX-3C) is the first Polish satellite and is part of the BRITE project ( BRITE -star Target Explorer). The project's satellites are designed to make photometric observations of some of the brightest stars in the sky in order to study those stars for variability. The observations have a precision that is at least ten times better than achievable with ground-based observations and it is packaged in a CanX- class nanosatellite. The Lem satellite was launched on November 21, 2013 with a Russian Dnepr launcher from the Jasny Cosmodrome .

The companies

The Polish consortium that supports the Lem project was founded in October 2009 by the Space Research Center and the Nicolaus-Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences and was involved in the research, design and construction of scientific instruments in the international research project BRITE-PL chartered.

Poland will run the research program with the University of Toronto's Space Flight Laboratory, which specializes in the development and manufacture of such small satellites. According to the agreement with SFL, the Canadian side will provide most of the components and subsystems necessary for the integration of the first satellite, the complete documentation, and will train a team of Polish engineers to properly carry out the integration and testing of the satellite Before it starts. In the case of the second satellite, the number of components shipped from Canada is limited. In addition, a large part of the subsystems are developed in SRC PAS and manufactured in Poland.
