The University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS) is an aerospace technology research facility based in Toronto , Canada.

Located in the Downsview neighborhood, the institute was founded in 1949 and is operated by the University of Toronto and its faculties of applied science and engineering . The UTIAS receives research funding from several state and private institutions. The largest government agencies are the National Research Council of Canada , Defense Research and Development Canada, and the Canadian Department of National Defense . International sponsors include the European Space Agency , Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory , Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics , NASA Ames Research Center and the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority .

Research and Cooperations

In 1970 the institute was involved in the rescue operation of the Apollo 13 astronauts, who were on their way to the moon, when an explosion occurred on board. Scientists from the UTIAS team calculated the pressure required to separate the Lunar Module from the Command / Service Module without damaging it. This was necessary so that the Apollo capsule could submerge in the earth's atmosphere and thus the astronauts could return to earth.

A few years ago, the scientists developed the world's first microwave- powered drone, the first motor-powered ornithopter and Canada's first MOST space telescope .

The research institute has the greatest expertise in aircraft design, flight simulation, space robotics, microsate technology , numerical fluid mechanics and nuclear fusion . The private sector partners include national and international companies in the aerospace industry and the like. a. Bombardier Aerospace , MDA Space Missions and General Atomics . The Canadian Advanced Nanospace eXperiment , a program for the development and research of new microsatellite technology, is carried out at the institute.

At the UTIAS location there are several clean rooms, vacuum chambers and anechoic anechoic rooms, assembly and test areas, laboratories and our own mission control center.
