The Lviv Book Forum is the largest book fair in Ukraine . It has been taking place since 1994. From the beginning, Oleksandra Koval was in charge of the event, which existed as a civil organization. In September 2005 it counted 60,000 visitors. Over 700 publishers showed their products in the former palace of Count Potocki, which served as an exhibition space, in his courtyard and in the city center of Lviv . From 2001 onwards, a number of German authors took part in the book fair and the literature festival associated with it. On this occasion, Judith Hermann , Marcel Beyer , Thomas Brussig and Ingo Schulze visited Lemberg. In particular through the extensive networks of the Meridian Chernivtsi , many other German, Austrian and Swiss authors followed. In 2005, with the support of the Foreign Office, the Frankfurt Book Fair had a joint stand. Here and in a few other years new publications and translations by Ukrainian authors into German were shown. Suhrkamp and the Goethe Institute introduced themselves with contemporary German authors. In addition to the Lviv event, Kiev has been trying for years to establish a second book fair, the Kiev Book Arsenal , which now takes place in April, with much less charisma and participation, but in the nicer rooms of the state "art arsenal" .
