John Lennon Wall
The John Lennon Wall used to be a common old town wall in Prague , but since the 1980s it has been painted with graffiti inspired by John Lennon and parts of Beatles lyrics.
In 1988 the wall sparked a conflict between some young Czechs and the communist government of Gustáv Husák . Young people described the wall with complaints about the government. This led to a clash between hundreds of students and security police on Charles Bridge . The movement of these students was subsequently referred to as Lennonism . The government spoke of alcoholics, the insane, sociopaths, and Western agents.
The wall is constantly being repainted and the original portrait of John Lennon has long since disappeared under several layers of new paint. Even when the wall was repainted by the authorities, after two days it was full of poems and flowers again. Today the wall represents the ideals of youth such as love and peace.
The wall belongs to the Order of Malta , who have since allowed graffiti, and is located in Velkopřevorské náměstí , a street in Lesser Town Prague.
