Lennox Fitzroy Ballah

Lennox Fitzroy Ballah (born August 26, 1929 in Fyzabad ; † March 29, 2003 in Cocorite ) was a Trinidadian lawyer and from April 19, 2002 until his death a judge at the International Tribunal for the Sea .

After training as a teacher at Government Teachers' Training College and the University of the West Indies , Ballah worked as a teacher in Trinidad and Tobago and Ghana from 1947 to 1962 before moving to the Commonwealth Institute in London as a lecturer in 1963 . During his two-year stay in England , he also studied at the University of London . In 1965 he entered the service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago and received his master's degree from New York University in the same year . From 1967 to 1970 Ballah worked for the Permanent Mission of his country to the United Nations . From 1989 to 1997 he was director of the Institute of Marine Affairs in Trinidad and Tobago.

Ballah gained experience in maritime law as a government representative in various international law disputes and at important conferences. He led the delegation from Trinidad and Tobago in negotiations with Venezuela and Brazil on fishing rights, took part in the third UN Conference on the Law of the Sea and was involved in setting up the International Seabed Authority .

Ballah was admitted to the bar in both the United States and Trinidad and Tobago and was a member of the American Society for International Law and the International Law Association , among others .
