Leo (Metropolitan)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leo was an Orthodox metropolitan of the Kievan Rus , probably in the 11th century.

identity

Leo's identity is not certain. He is in two directories of the 16th century as the author of a polemic against the customs of the Latin Church signified Λέоντоς μητρоπоλίτоυ 'Рωσίας πρός ρωμαίоυς ήτоι λατίνоυς περι τών άζύμων ( From Leo, Metropolitan of Ros to the Romans (ie Byzantines) about the customs the Latins (ie Latin Church) ) or Λεόντоς μητρоπоλίτоυ τής έν 'Рωσια Пρεσθλάβας περί τоώ ότι оύ δεΐ τελέιν τά άζυμα ( from Leo, Metropolitan of Rus of Presthlabos fact that Azymen should not be used ). The text of the polemic has not been preserved.

The ecclesiastical historiography of the 18th century interpreted him as the second metropolitan of Kiev with a term of office from 992 to 1003. Well-known Russian historians of this time disagreed. B. Nikolai Karamsin.

Leo was named in the registers as Metropolitan of Russia and Bishop of Pereyaslav . A term of office cannot be inferred from the information. A polemic against the Catholic Church can actually be assigned to the time shortly before or after 1054, when the Orthodox and Catholic Churches separated .
