Leo II Mung

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leo II. Mung (also: Lev Philosopher; Middle Greek Λέων ο Μούγγος , Bulgarian : Левъ философъ, Лъв Мунг) was Archbishop of Ohrid 1108–1120.

Leo was a Romaniotic Jew , and a pupil of the famous Rabbi Tobia ben Eliezer before converting to Orthodox Christianity. As a great scholar - hence the nickname “The Philosopher” - he was sent by the Patriarch of Constantinople as a missionary to the area that today belongs to southwestern Ukraine. He spoke several languages. Soon after, he was installed as Archbishop of Ohrid, where he succeeded Theophylact of Ohrid . Beyond that, little is known about his life.

Leo commissioned an icon that is known to this day, the Bogorodica od Blagovestenie ; he received the honorary title Didaskalos ton Ethnon .
