location

The Leobad is located at the southern end of the Eltingen district, in the vicinity of the club area of SV Leonberg / Eltingen . The motorway connections Leonberg-West and -Est of the A 8 are one to two kilometers away.

history

entrance

In the past, the Leonberger and Eltinger swam in the Glems and the dammed Mühlkanal at the Clausenmühle . After the First World War there was the opportunity to swim in the lake of the Eppinger gypsum works, where the city park is today. Plans for an outdoor swimming pool in the Barrwiesen (Seestrasse) were not implemented for financial reasons. Instead, the Leonberg-Eltingen bathing company was founded to build an open-air swimming pool on the lake. When the operation of the gypsum works no longer allowed swimming in 1935, the construction of an outdoor pool was planned. After the city of Leonberg did not agree on the location, the municipality of Eltingen built the bath at the current location of the Leobad. The neighboring motorway construction proved useful, as the groundwater was pumped out for this. The opening was celebrated in 1938. The pool, which was filled with Glemswasser, was 50 meters long and 18 meters wide, and there was also a diving platform.

The Leobad was built from 1988 to 1990 for 12.6 million euros. The area of the old Eltingen outdoor pool was integrated. The inauguration took place in May 1990. By 2010 over four million visitors were counted. In 2013 the pool had around 257,000 visitors. The record in one day is 8,700 bathers.

As part of the referendum on the future of the indoor swimming pool on March 25, 2012, it was discussed to build a new building on the premises of the outdoor swimming pool, but this was not approved. In January 2017 the complete renovation of the Leobad was decided, for which the bath was closed in 2019. The technology was renewed, the large pools were given a stainless steel cladding, there is a new slide and a new steam bath and the diving tower has been rebuilt. The interior of the warm pool is omitted. The costs were around 15 million euros.

The pool has a 50-meter sports pool with six lanes, in which regional swimming competitions also take place. The non-swimmer pool, known as the "adventure pool", is equipped with a current channel. 25-meter swimming lanes are integrated for school sports. The three-lane “Racer” water slide with time measurement and a diving pool with a 1-meter board and a 3-meter and 5-meter platform add to the attractiveness of the pool. A toddler pool and a water playground complete the equipment. The total water area is 2900 m² (status before renovation).

The sunbathing lawns on a relatively large area are covered with old trees. There are various sports options, such as table tennis, several tartan fields and a beach volleyball field. There is also a nudist lawn in the bathroom.

The self-service catering area consists of a terrace, a kiosk and indoor management. There is a beer garden by the old bathing building, which is currently no longer open. The building has already been used for events (e.g. World Cup public viewing, blood donation campaign).

Others

The large pools are only heated by a solar system, so that the water temperatures are usually perceived as "fresh".

The pool is used by the swimming club Wasserfreunde Leonberg for training. The association organizes the two-day Sprinter Cup annually in the pool with international participation.
