Leonardo Loredan is a portrait of the Doge Leonardo Loredan by Giovanni Bellini from 1501. It shows the Doge in his ceremonial costume. The picture hangs in the National Gallery in London today .

Emergence

Giovanni Bellini portrayed Leonardo Loredan in 1501, on the occasion of the assumption of the Doge's office, which he held until his death in 1521.

presentation

The Doge Loredan is shown in three-quarter profile in the style of official Venetian portraits behind a parapet. He wears the dog's cap, the corno ducale , a stiff cap in the shape of a horn over a white linen cap and the doge's stand-up collar with the striking buttons, the campanoni d'oro . With the help of the oil colors, Giovanni Bellini succeeded in reproducing the silky texture of the precious damask in contrast to the gold-interwoven areas. As with this picture, Giovanni Bellini preferred a light background, the flare-light effect and the undirected gaze to the side in his portraits. The psychological inaccessibility of his portraits is characteristic of the painting style of Giovanni Bellini and his brother Gentile . Giovanni Bellini painted Doge Loredan in the popular style of a portrait bust. Giovanni Bellini signed Loredan's portrait with his name in Latinized form on the piece of paper on the parapet: IOANNES BELLINVS.
