Stefan Weppelmann

Stefan Weppelmann (born 1970 ) is a German art historian . Since 2015 he has been the director of the picture gallery of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna .

Life

Stefan Weppelmann studied art history , classical archeology and communication science at the University of Münster . He wrote his master's thesis on the altarpieces by Peter Paul Rubens for the Basilica di Santa Croce in Gerusalemme in Rome . He then worked in the exhibitions department of the Westphalian State Museum for Art and Cultural History in Münster . A research stay at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York followed . At the University of Florence , Weppelmann was a research associate in the Corpus of Florentine Painting research project and continued his studies at the Fondazione Longhi and the Art History Institute in Florence . He was with the dissertation in 2002 Spinelli Aretino and the Tuscan painting of the 14th century at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster doctorate . From 2003 he worked at the Gemäldegalerie of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin as a curator for Italian and Spanish Renaissance painting. His highly acclaimed exhibitions included the show Faces of the Renaissance, shown in cooperation with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the exhibition The Botticelli Renaissance, dedicated to the work and aftermath of Sandro Botticelli . On March 1, 2015, Weppelmann moved to Vienna, where he succeeded Sylvia Ferino as director of the picture gallery of the Kunsthistorisches Museum. In 2017, the Rubens exhibition : The Power of Metamorphosis was one of his first major shows. Weppelmann is the author of numerous publications.
